Fundamentals and Best Practices in Anodizing

9:30 am – 10:30 am Intermediate

This presentation provides participants with a clear understanding of anodizing, from substrate condition and part racking through the chemical steps of cleaning, etching, deoxidizing, anodizing, electrolytic coloring, dying, and sealing. Quality testing and troubleshooting will also be discussed. At the conclusion of this class, participants will be equipped with the knowledge on how to successfully produce a quality anodized finish.

Improving Effectiveness and Efficiency of Pretreating Aluminum

10:30 am – 11:00 am Intermediate

In automotive production, first‑time quality is critical, and when unexpected issues arise, root cause analysis must be accurate and timely. However, many pretreatment operations and automotive OEMs still rely on pass‑fail methods such as water break and ink/dyne testing to evaluate cleanliness. By measuring cleanliness before and after passivation, pretreatment teams can confirm that parts meet requirements as they enter and exit the process. This approach reduces rework, improves efficiency, and enables effective problem‑solving with both suppliers and customers. In parallel, aluminum extruders are adjusting extrusion oils to maintain cleanliness within defined Relative Fluorescence Unit (RFU) ranges, allowing manufacturers to clean and passivate parts to customer‑specified RFU targets. While this approach requires alignment and education across the supply chain, it represents a significant improvement over traditional pass‑fail testing. Attendees will see real‑world case studies involving aluminum castings and extrusions, including specifications driven by automotive OEM requirements.
