Overview

Setting the Stage: Metal Cleaning Before Pretreatment

3:00 pm – 4:30 pm Intermediate

Reliable adhesion and corrosion performance begin with cleaning. Before phosphating or next generation conversion coatings, the first active step is removal of oils, oxides, and particulates to enable uniform coating nucleation and growth. Effective cleaning is governed by the four cleaning levers: chemical, physical, temperature, and time. Proper process design balances these four levers for the types of soil and substrates being processed. In practice, robust lines employ multi-stage strategies: alkaline cleaning for organic residues, and acid cleaning for inorganic residues. Chemistry selection spans alkaline, neutral, and acid cleaners, augmented by surfactants and boosters, and can be tailored for multi-metal operations ahead of conversion processes. Process types such as spray or immersion impact physical impingement and should be considered. Quality control combines in-line analytics with simple surface checks such as the ASTM F22 water break test to verify removal of hydrophobic films that would impair coating, painting, or bonding. Attendees will learn how to specify cleaning sequences, choose chemistries, and implement control and verification methods that de-risk downstream pretreatment and painting for mixed metal manufacturing.
