Overview

Specifying Hybrid Zinc Coatings: Hot-Dip Galvanizing + Thermal Spray Zinc

9:30 am – 11:00 am Intermediate

This two‑part presentation explores the specification and application of hybrid zinc coatings—combining hot‑dip galvanizing with thermal spray zinc—and duplex coating systems that incorporate paint or powder coating over galvanizing.
In the first section, project owners and specifiers will learn how hybrid zinc systems are being used to provide corrosion protection for bridges, utility structures, wind energy components, and other critical infrastructure. The session will compare hot‑dip galvanizing and thermal spray zinc processes, discuss typical applications for each, and highlight key specification considerations that help ensure both coatings work effectively together on the same project.
The second section focuses on duplex coatings and the benefits of applying paint or powder coating over galvanized steel to significantly extend service life. Attendees will learn how galvanizing and topcoat systems work together, why clear communication and defined responsibilities are critical to success, and how to recognize and properly prepare different galvanized surface conditions for duplex coating systems.
