The use of right angle grinders in industrial manufacturing poses many obvious hazards for workers including noise, dust, metal fragments, kickback, bursting wheels, workplace accidents, and more. However, there is one invisible risk that is seemingly harmless until it is too late: vibration. Hand Arm Vibration, or HAV, is recognized as a “causative factor for musculoskeletal and neuro-vascular disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and vasospastic disease i.e. white-finger syndrome (Raynaud’s syndrome, also known as HAV syndrome)” (Bovenzi M. (1998)). In this session we will explain the risks of Hand Arm Vibration in metalworking applications using right angle grinders, and ways employers can limit their worker’s exposure to vibration based on third-party research using a vibrometer and various abrasives for right angle grinders.
